New CDC Report Documents Rise in Childhood Food Allergy

New CDC Report Documents Rise in Childhood Food Allergy
Food allergies among children increased by 50 percent from 1997-99 to 2009-11, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. There are very few studies that look at food allergy prevalence over time. This report adds to other studies that have indicated an increase in food allergy within the past two decades. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported in 2010 that between 2 and up to 10 percent of the population has food allergy. As FARE CEO John Lehr notes in a U.S. News & World Report article, the CDC’s report “reinforces the need for education and awareness about food allergies across the country.”
