About 12 million Americans suffer from food allergies. I am one of them. Like many of you searching for news about the condition or information on certain food allergies, I also have searched the Internet time and again for such information. The Internet is a great resource but there are those of us who also like to hear about our condition by another means such as say a magazine. I have found one such magazine, Allergic Living, that caters its information to those with food allergies, environmental allergies, and asthma.

The magazine may be Canadian based, but food allergies do not adhere to nationality, or ethnicity. Regardless of where the information comes from, the information is useful to all of us with this life-altering condition. The magazine has been helpful to me. Reading other people’s stories in how they handle food allergies and asthma helps me to put my life into perspective and to realize I am not alone in this fight. The magazine not only includes people’s stories, but also includes informational articles on the latest allergy and asthma  related news.

Yep. It’s that time of year. Allergies flare up not only outside the home, but inside as well. The following article has some good information on what culprits to look for inside your home, which could be making you sick.

Are You Allergic To Your Home?

Proper Spring Cleaning Can Combat Allergens

As allergy-sufferers nationwide tackle their nose nemeses or keep scratching their heads – literally – in the quest to identify the source of their allergen angst, they can consider these tips for combating allergies in the home.

The most common allergens are dust mites and animal dander found mostly inside, not outside, the home sweet home. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) also lists cockroaches as common allergens, especially in inner cities or southern parts of the United States.

Perfume, room deodorizers, harsh cleaning chemicals, paint, and talcum powder are also known allergens and asthma triggers to reduce or avoid altogether.

I know all too well about the hardships of living with food allergies and the concerns that come with the condition. Unlike the family in the following article, at the present time, I don’t have any children to have to be concerned about their food allergies. Yet, I am pregnant, due in November 2008, and allergies run in my family and in my husbands. Our children will more than likely have some form of allergy we will need to be concerned about. But that is in the future yet. Read how one family deals with food allergies and their concerns thereof in the article below.

Living With Food Allergies More Than Watching What You Eat

Cameron, family learning to be cautious about everything.

BRACEVILLE – Cameron Abbott’s little brother, Brandon, dotes with a 2-year-old’s glee on ice cream, chocolate pudding, and butterscotch custard.

Cameron, however, is allergic to cow’s milk and eggs.

No cookies for this 4-year-old. No hand soap made with milk derivatives. No scrambled eggs for breakfast. Or pancakes. Toast without butter.

“What will we do when he goes to school?” his dad, Chris Abbott, repeated.

“Pray.

If you are pregnant and have asthma, it is best for both you and the baby to keep your asthma under control and avoid all of your asthma triggers if possible. The following article will tell you more of the importance of controlling asthma during pregnancy.

Asthma Attacks Early In Pregnancy Put Baby At Greater Risk Of Birth Defects, New Research Suggests

Uncontrolled asthma during the first trimester of pregnancy greatly increases the risk of birth defects in babies, according to new research to be published in the June issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Canadian researchers Lucie Blais, PhD, and Amelie Forget, MSc, concluded that women who had an asthma flare-up in the first three months of pregnancy were 48 percent more likely to have a baby with at least one congenital defect than asthmatic mothers who did not have a flare-up in the first trimester.

Use Extra Vigilance When Reading Food Labels May 11, 2008

You can never be too careful when reading labels on packages of food. I know from experience how important this is for someone with food allergies. I also know how hard it can be sometimes to pick out everything in the ingredient list you may react to. Mistakes happen, unfortunately, but one way to stop the mistakes is to take extra time when shopping to allow yourself the time need to read the labels thoroughly before buying the item. Another way to make it easier on the customer, is for the companies to produce easily read labels that are not in more than one language side by side as well as not all in scientific words. Just use common words we can all understand. This will help the customer know and understand exactly what is in the product with less of a chance for a mishap. One such company is making sure its customers understand its labeling system.

Enjoy Life(R) Foods Urges Using Extra Vigilance When Reading Food Labels

Food Allergy Awareness Week, May 11-17, 2008

A single, innocent parent oversight resulting in a child’s anaphylactic reaction to one of its allergy-friendly foods recently prompted one company to voluntarily strengthen the food allergy labeling on all of its products.

Business Wire

“As the U.S. leader in allergy-friendly AND gluten-free foods, we take very seriously our responsibility to our customers,” says Scott Mandell, President, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Enjoy Life Foods. “So we want to do everything in our power to ensure that what happened with that child doesn’t happen again,” he adds.

I am no stranger to food allergies and neither are the over 12 million Americans who also share food allergies. That’s right. I said over 12 million Americans have food allergies now compared a decade ago. Curious? An article by The Pittsburgh News tells you more. View a snippet of the article below and visit the link to read the rest of the article.

Food Allergies Growing In U.S.; How Can You Stay Safe?

For millions of Americans with food allergies, eating out can be a dangerous, sometimes deadly convenience.

More than 12 million people in the U.S. have food allergies, which is more than double what it was 10 years ago. A lot of the people eat out, but a large number of them never mention that they have a food allergy when they visit a restaurant.

Eating out is a rare event for 7-year-old Daniel Clowes, who has multiple allergies to milk, eggs, wheat, peanut and tree nuts. Because his family is so protective, he’s only had an allergic reaction once.
