New this past month from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network:
Just because a product was safe the last time you purchased it doesn’t mean the ingredients have stayed the same! It is very important to read all labels all of the time. The following food manufacturers have recently worked with FAAN to provide you with information about changes in their products.
2009
January
Kraft Foods North America, Inc., would like to notify you that beginning in early March 2009, Planters Deluxe Mixed Nuts (in 21-oz., 11.25-oz., and 10-oz. packages) will be reformulated to include macadamia nuts. The new packages for these three products will continue to include the following allergen information statement: “Manufactured on equipment that processes peanut, other tree nuts.”
Consumers are strongly encouraged to read the labels on the products before every purchase, as formulas (recipes) do change from time to time. If you have any questions you may call the company at (877) 677-3268.

Allergy testing — minus the risk
Right now, the only way to definitively diagnose a food allergy is to feed a child some of the suspected food at a hospital so they can get prompt treatment if they have a serious reaction.
But immunologists at Dalhousie University’s medical school are working with doctors at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax to devise a laboratory test that could identify allergies without exposing a child to risk.
In department head Jean Marshall’s lab, researchers can grow the mast cells involved in allergic responses, add serum from a patient’s body, introduce the food and watch what happens.

CDC Study Finds 3 Million U.S. Children have Food or Digestive Allergies
The number of young people who had a food or digestive allergy increased 18 percent between 1997 and 2007, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2007, approximately 3 million U.S. children and teenagers under age 18 – or nearly 4 percent of that age group – were reported to have a food or digestive allergy in the previous 12 months, compared to just over 2.3 million (3.3 percent) in 1997.

EGG, MILK, AND SOY ALLERGY ALERT
October 31, 2008
TO: Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network Members
FROM: The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network and General Mills
RE: Progresso Hearty Tomato Soup
General Mills is voluntarily recalling a single day’s production of
Progresso Hearty Tomato soup because of a product labeling issue. Product
produced on this date may have been mislabeled and may contain undeclared
egg, milk, and soy.
This voluntary recall includes only 19-oz. cans of Progresso Hearty Tomato
soup with the following code date printed on the bottom of the can:
19May10 NV VN-3.
A production error resulted in a limited number of cases of Progresso
Light Vegetable and Noodle soup being mislabeled as Progresso Hearty
Tomato soup. The mislabeled soups contain a product that is visibly
different from the soup depicted on the label. Rather than containing
Progresso Hearty Tomato soup, a mislabeled can would actually contain
Progresso Light Vegetable and Noodle soup.
No other varieties or production dates of Progresso soup are affected by
this recall.
Consumers wishing to request a refund or further information may contact
General Mills Consumer Services at (800) 200-9377.
This mailing has been funded by General Mills to bring this situation to
your attention.
